St Kilda – a small house with a green lawn
St Kilda is a private house with a beautiful green lawn in the suburbs of Melbourne (Australia, Victoria). It is one of the brightest examples of the excellent work of Jost Architects.
The same lawn from a different angle
Not an easy task
First of all, the house is notable for the fact that before the reconstruction it was practically falling apart from old age. Urgent repairs were needed, although the small family living in it had limited finances. Yet, despite concerns, the clients and the design team decided to create this unique home.
The first problem the team faced was to fit:

- kitchen
- children’s
- bathroom
- pantry
- 3 bedrooms
- wardrobe
- backyard
in 238 square meters. And they did a great job with it. Designed with hard-wearing materials and easy-to-maintain finishes to withstand the hyperactivity of young children while still pleasing to the eyes of adults.

Within budget
Since the reconstruction was budgetary, the possibilities in the choice of materials were limited. But this problem was also solved. The team has minimized the use of steel in favor of timber, and has also replaced similar, cheaper options commonly used.

In the end, the project replaced a dull, crumbling building with a home that is nice to come back to. It is full of contrasts, but they are not dissonant, but on the contrary, they are in harmony with each other. The simple aesthetics of the façade seem to hide something exciting behind it, generating the curiosity of the like. And a house that has stood for 165 years is now guaranteed to stand for another 100.
